Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), named after the famous Tamil Scholar Professor P. Sundaram Pillai, was established on 7 September, 1990. There are 24 academic departments in the University. DD & CE was started in the University in the year 1994.

DCE approved Courses - DD & CE, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University offers courses in Science (B.Sc & M.Sc), Arts (B.A & M.A), Commerce (B.Com & M.Com) and Professional (B.ed, B.Lit, BBA, BCA, B.Li.Sc, MCA, B.Li.Sc and PGDCA) through distance learning. B.Ed Programme through Distance Education is approved by Distance Education Council, Ref.No. DEC/TSU/TN/2006/9763 dated 02.07.2008. Eligibility for B.ed is UG or PG Teachers serving in recognized schools in Tamil Nadu with a minimum of two years of teaching experience.

Technically Collaborative Programmes - DD & CE, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University also offers Technically Collaborative UG, PG, Diploma, Certificate and PG Diploma programmes in Information Technology, Management, Science and Vocational streams in collaboration with 67 colleges in Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Special Programmes for School Dropouts - DD & CE, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University offers 1 year duration courses. They are (1) GATE course for those who have failed in 8th standard, (2) Bridge Course for those who have failed in 10th standard and (3) Degree Bridge Courses (1 and 2) for those who have passed in 10th standard or Bridge Course or its equivalent

Methodology - Under Academic activities students are provided study material, home assignments and arranging of personal contact programmes. Four rounds of Personal Contact Programme (PCP) classes are conducted for the DD&CE students from the month of July to October for the Calendar Year students and from January to April for Academic Year students. Special PCP classes are also arranged for SC/ST students on need basis. DD & CE PCP Centers are in (1) Tirunelveli District is Sadakathullah Appa College Rahmath Nagar, Palayamkottai - 627 011 (2) Thoothukudi District is Kamaraj College, Tuticorin - 628 003 and Kanyakumari District is S.T. Hindu College, Nagercoil - 629 002

Selection - Admission to courses are made through Merit. For B.ed, students have to appear for entrance exam. Spot admission meets are also conducted every year during admission season to disseminate information and provide counseling regarding various courses conducted by DD&CE at various places such as 1) Nagercoil, 2) Martandam, 3) Nazareth, 4) Tiruchendur and 5) Courtallam (or) Tenkasi

Application Procedure - Application form and prospectus can be had in person/by post from the Directorate/Approved Study Centres by sending a Demand draft in favour of "The Registrar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University", payable at Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu mentioning the name, address and course at the backside of the draft in ink along with a requisition letter addressed to The Director, DD&CE, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli – 627 012. Completed form after enclosing required documents should be submitted to The Director, Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education, Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli 627 012.
