PTU is located in Kapurthala, Punjab. PTU, DEP offers UG, PG, PG Diploma and Diploma courses. Punjab Technical University has got DEC Regular Recognition from 2009-10 for conducting technical courses through distance education. Punjab Government constituted Punjab Technical University in 1997 by an Act of State Legislature. Distance Education Programme (DEP) was started by PTU to spread technical education through distance learning. Today, the University has more than 2100 Learning Centres spread across the country offering quality technical education in the fields of Information Technology and Management, Paramedical Technology, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management & Tourism, Media and Mass Communication & Journalism etc. Courses - PTU offers a unique Multi Entry & Multi Exit System called the pyramid structure of courses. A candidate can start after 10 + 2 and complete PG level through this system. At each level candidate will be awarded degree according to level passed. University offers courses in Science (B.Sc & M.Sc), Arts (B.A & M.A), Commerce (B.Com & M.Com) , Vocational (Diploma, Certificate & PG Diploma) and Professional [BBA, BCA, MBA(Hospital Management, Hotel Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management and Retail Management) and M.Sc (I.T, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Computer Application, Clinical Microbiology, Fashion Technology, Networking Technologies, Interior Design, Mass Communication, Medical Lab Technology and Multimedia Technology)] through distance learning.
Methodology - Under Academic activities students are provided set of books at the commencement of the semester that are to be obtained from the Learning Centres. The curriculum and the calendar provides 240 hours of education delivery in each semester to all students. This is apart from the tests, assignments, self learning exercises, projects, industrial training etc. This is normally taken as 2 hours per day or consolidated at the weekends. Each course has a scheme that contains the details of all external and internal papers with their maximum and minimum marks, as applicable. Student can also avail the facility Learning Management System from PTU website for assessing course material online.
Examination Centres - PTU has established more than 450 examination centres in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Orissa, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. It helps the students to appear for the exam in their native places. Examination - All question papers are made available in soft copy through the web based software to the examination centre 30 minutes before the commencement of exam. University has established various nodal centres for collection of answer sheet. Here they are tracked, segregated and sent to various evaluation centres. University has established an in-house OMR scanning solution for faster and accurate tabulation of result. The University works on semester system and examinations are conducted twice a year in March and September. The Learning Centres assess the students periodically through group discussions, projects and internal tests. These internal tests contribute 25% as internal assessment in each semester where as external examination conducted by the University contributes 75%.
Selection - Admission to courses are done subject to availability of seats / course at Learning Centre. Admissions are made twice a year in March and September outside Punjab and in September only in the state of Punjab.
Application Procedure - Application form can be obtained from PTU, DEP or Learning Centre or Website. The semester fee including regular examination fee (for the course in which the student intends to take admission) as prescribed in the prospectus has to be paid by the student in the form of a demand draft only in favour of “The Registrar, Punjab Technical University”, payable at Jalandhar. Student must ensure to collect receipt for the fee paid to the Learning Centre. The semester fee and the exam fee should be paid in form of a single demand draft. Student should mention (a) Name, (b) Father's/Guardian's Name, (c) Address & Phone Number, (d) Course Name, (e) Semester and (f)Learning Centre Code at backside of the demand draft.
