The University is located Mumbai. It offers UG, PG, Certificate, PG Diploma and Diploma courses. Mumbai University got Programme-wise Regular Recognition from DEC till 2012 - 2013 for B.A, M.A, B.Com, M.Com and M.Sc courses. The University of Mumbai was earlier known as University of Bombay. It is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It started correspondence courses in 1971. In 2008 it has been renamed as 'Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL). Courses - University offers courses in Science (B.Sc & M.Sc), Arts (B.A & M.A), Commerce (B.Com & M.Com) , PG Diploma and MCA through distance learning. The Institute is planning to introduce new courses like MMS, B.ed, BPP and M.A (Psychology). Refer to Mumbai University distance learning courses
Methodology - The learning process is mainly through the medium of printed study materials. Guidance lectures are conducted at about 76 centres in Mumbai and surrounding areas. PCP Center starts in the month of November. It is compulsory for students of B.SC IT, Computer Science, M.SC IT, Computer Science and MCA to attend the lectures in PCP centers.
Study Centres - It has study centres in Maharashtra. Personal Contact Programmes are held in following centres - Churchgate, Kandivali, Malad, Bhayandar, Neral (Raigad), Mhasala (Raigad), Mahad (Raigad), Poladpur (Raigad), Ratnagiri, Navi Mumbai (Koparkhairne), Bhiwandi, Ulhasnar, Chembur, Vidya vihar, Vikroli, Bhandup, Thane, Mumbra, Dombivali and Kalyan. Selection - Admission to courses are made through Merit of qualifying exam and entrance exam for Information Technology and MCA courses.
Application Procedure - First year B.A / B.Com / B.Sc and First Year M.A / M.com / M.Sc admission are done online while for second year courses, the Admission Forms are collected from IDOL, at Vidyanagari Campus.
Examination - Examination Forms for the October / November examination are filled and submitted in the month of July, and for March / April examination in the month of December.There are no projects and practical works for all courses at IDOL. However, there are assignments for MA (Education), and project works for technical courses. The Examinations are conducted by Examination unit of I.D.E. Supplementary Examinations are also conducted for Ex-students of Mumbai University Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses except PGDFM & PGDORM Courses during the month of October/November.
